I too have a thing for this couple almost half my life (since the release of the film). It still is my favourite couple, will always be. 'Cause they were made for each other. She, an illiterate gypsy from an exotic land and he, the corrupt European intellectual.

in my opinion, esmeralda/frollo (consensual) is a little out of the blue as well as she, you know, spits in his face and curses his name. i rather like the one-sided affair version of it though (since it's...in the move ). but those are just my opinions.

As for Clopin, I don't know if he's gay, he's supposed to be a mixture of the real Clopin (king of the gypsies) and the poet Gringoire, and they both loved Esmeralda in their own way.
Since you've seen the film you can see of course that Esmeralda doesn't like Frollo. But that's the whole point when doing fanart, we can't just sit around and watch our favourite cartoon character being spat at by the woman he lusts after! We have to do something about it, that's why we turn Esmeralda into a woman ready for the judge's love.
But you really can't write much fanfic on Frollo if the affair remains one-sided, can you? That's why our Esmeralda is hard to get in the beginning, but then changes her mind.
